Exhibition Overview

April 2026.
The Shinjuku Kabukicho Shunga Exhibition: WA returns.

Bold, unrestrained, and bewitching.
Katsushika Hokusai (1760 to 1849) wielded his brush with absolute freedom, even in shunga.

Decadent and seductive.
Keisai Eisen (1791 to 1848), inspired by Hokusai, absorbed his influence and unfolded a sensuality uniquely his own.

They influenced one another, yet their gazes upon allure were utterly distinct.
A contest of allure.

This exhibition brings together shunga and spring-themed ukiyo-e from the collection of Mitsuru Uragami, representative of Uragami Sōkyūdō, centering on the works of Hokusai and Eisen.

Edo’s spring blooms in Kabukicho.
Further details will be teased soon.
